An homage to Go North's Karlos Carcamo and Greg Slick

One of the missions of Beacon Artist Union has been to provide a vital link between the activities at bau and the community of Beacon. Every year bau opens it's doors to invitationals and this year it has chosen to exhibit three exceptional artists of Beacon, Karlos Carcamo, Greg Slick and Eleanor White.

While we all miss Go North gallery in Beacon and the wonderful curatorial eye and aesthetic of Caracamo and Slick, they have not disappeared. The dynamic duo still curate together including last years well received curation at the Dorsky Museum. Carcamo and Slick are well regarded artists in their own right and have exhibited extensively including recent shows in Manhattan but curiously not together. Well, bau decided it was high time these two fine artists exhibited together and where better to show together than in their adopted hometown of Beacon.

Also showing at bau in the back gallery, Beacon's own Eleanor White. Eleanor's outstanding works have caught our eye at Beacon Open Studios for several years in a row now.

Karlos Carcamo

His artistic practice involves a multi-discipline approach to art making
that incorporates a broad spectrum
of high and low cultural references. He use this conceptual framework
as a means to make work that reflects his own personal subjective experiences while also commenting on issues related to contemporary culture at large.

Greg Slick

Is a multimedia artist. Slick attempts to find and formalize a personal and socially critical point of view in abstraction. His work deals with themes that range from everyday observations of human nature to intellectual queries and issues of global and historical significance. Stripping away the inessential and showing only what is indispensable, Slick lays down forms and colors taken from a constantly evolving lexicon of imagery that, on many levels, owes much to influences ranging from crowd dynamics to Chinese calligraphy, from street art to Tlingit iconography.

Eleanor White

Is a 2007 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship recipient in Drawings. She received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

She will be exhibiting Works on Paper from her "Playing Card Drawings" The pieces in this series are made by either drawing on playing cards, or scratching off areas of the cards.

Artist Carol Flaitz makes the unseen tactile in Touching One Billionth of a Meter

BEACON, NY, October 2011 - Infinitesimal landscapes of precious metals transformed by electric current come to enlarged life in Touching One Billionth of a Meter, a solo exhibition of recent works by multimedia artist Carol Flaitz at BAU gallery, 161 Main Street in Beacon, New York, from October 8 through November 6. Flaitz's tactile panels, which she encourages visitors to touch, are based on extreme magnifications of the insides of computer chips.

Flaitz, originally a ceramics artist, became infatuated with project images from an electron microscope brought home by her husband, IBM senior engineer Phil Flaitz. Cross sections of the metals inside layers of computer chips, originally used for diagnostic purposes, fascinated the artist while teasing her with nano-landscapes she could see but not touch.

Flaitz then began interpreting these images onto large wooden panels (the largest currently at 5 feet long) and building up reliefs using various materials to mimic the imagery she encountered; images of structures so small that light particles themselves were too large to capture with even microscopic photography.

Flaitz digs into her panels, creating "fissures" or deep crevices that hint at further worlds beyond, then builds up her surfaces with various compounds, salts, resins and glazes to bring to life geological landscapes that man has created but until her work could not truly inhabit. "For all the benefits of digital technology," says Flaitz, "the machines man creates literally shut him off from direct experience, reducing everything to the virtual world of light under glass. Within my lifetime, humanity has become beholden to a man-made world we cannot touch or feel. But once we get down to the molecular level, we find that the tidy clean chips and boards that run and rule our days are really organic minerals subject to the stresses of natural geophysics, and the illusion of perfection quickly breaks down, replaced by a natural beauty that is profound, chaotic and much more interesting."

While the final pieces themselves look like they occurred naturally, the work required to make them seem so is anything but a simple process. Single panels can take weeks or even months to layer enough to create the desired effect, and the combination of sometimes volatile materials often requires the artist to be as much chemist as painter or sculptor.

Flaitz has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently in Cologne, Germany. She holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Wales in Cardiff, Great Britain and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the prestigious College of Ceramics at Alfred University in New York. She and her family live in Newburgh, New York.

The Beacon Artist Union Gallery was formed in 2004 by six artists as a place for member artists to grow, present and market their works. It also has collaborative curatorial projects and hosts events on related disciplines like performances, talks, music and film. Title: Half Empty Heart Materials: Ice, pigment, Water, Burnt Wood, Light 2011

Tom Holmes is a sculptor working in stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. He works seasonally, tracking the weather. Different temperatures demand independent responses to materials and approaches. "Ice follows the freezing mark of winter, stone and steel the exterior work space of summer. Spring begins the search for materials and Fall settles all debts, emotional, physical and intellectual."

This show, Frozen in Frost will feature eight large scale photos of ice work from the 2011 ice season. Tom creates ice events using, glass, ice, water, steel, pigments and lights. He then photographs these events as a way of preserving and sharing the work. There will also be a live melting ice work at the opening. Tom never carves ice. He only works abstractly and with the intuition that natural forces bring into play as dynamic experience.

Featured on one of the gallery walls will be a large scale burnt wood piece developed over the last 11 years. This standing timber hung in the woods for the last decade waiting for decay and momentum to bring it to the ground. Gathered in early March, the piece, "Patience of the Expectant Mother", is sure to stop you in your tracks.

Smaller works of stone and steel will also be featured. With a larger work, "Bike Ride to Paris" of stone and steel featured in the main gallery space. You can visit Tom Holmes work at www.TomHolmes.com

Motile: JUST ADD WATER

As a child, I spent hours playing in the stream by my home. It was through this play that I began to explore the idea of creation within the aquatic ecosystem.

With my sculpture, I attempt to connect elements of play and scientific theory by making ceramics - a weighty medium derived from the natural elements of earth and fire - float. While the sculptures I've created are not conceived from direct source material, they are derived from basic microbiological forms and concepts.

The environments in which I place these sculptures are designed to activate the pieces, transforming them into elements of play, and removing them from the static form that ceramics traditionally take. I have also used simple devices to add kinetic and sonic elements to the work, allowing the pieces to oscillate, swirl, bob, cluster and even reverberate.

The May Night Maidens
Murderous intentions in the darkness by river’s edge, the May Night Maidens seek vengeance. Spurned by their lovers, they died violently or committed suicide by plunging into the river to drown their sorrow.

Call them what you will, water ghosts, water spirits, succubus, mermaid demons, nymphs or sprites, by day these sisters of the river dwell at the bottom of the river and walk the banks by moonlight. Upon seeing handsome young men, they fascinate them with songs and dancing in the meadows, mesmerizing them and leading their doomed lovers away to the river bottom to live with them forever.

But is it loneliness or vengeance that drives these women who were once so beautiful and innocent?

In her latest series, “The May Night Maidens”, artist Carla Goldberg continues her use of the fluidity of line which she is known for. Her body or work travels in a sister path to rivers and other flowing waters which she began in “Soundings” and “Bodice of the Goddess” which focused mainly on the Hudson River and the lore of female river spirits.

“The May Night Maidens” goes further afield and explores Russian myth and the darker realm of the tragic and violent female spirits called the “Rusalki” or Drowned Maidens which haunt the rivers throughout the world and across all cultures.

Inspired by the writings of Pushkin and Gogol about the Drowned Maidens which closely echo her own method of creating myth from local landscapes, Carla Goldberg has found that resin lets her capture a three dimensional snapshot of the essence of flowing water in what has been described as a “liquid rhythm which flows and coils through her imagery”. Through this, we get a glimpse of the last thing many an unwary traveler would see on a moonlit night.

Fellow artists Cabot Parsons, Carol Flaitz and Linda Domanoski volunteered to help her complete and install the large sheets of resin and fish for the window installation for The Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries as part of Window's on Main - a dialog between artists and businesses in Beacon as part of a Month long art Installation.
Carla said "It was an honor and pleasure for me to create this for The Beacon Institutes window". Twenty six windows on Beacon's Main Street are part of the Windows On Main Project. The show opens Saturday Aug. 8th and runs till Sept. 12. with a closing artists discussion at ZuZu's in Beacon.

artist statement

Tom Holmes is an artist, sculptor and musician living and working in the NEPA valley. "I am drawn to working in the six elements of stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. It gives me the ability to work intuitively. All possibilities can exist briefly before I impose parameters with regard to my emotional and intellectual contexts." The undercurrents of natural decay, unity, duality, symmetry, space, time and dimension are at the heart of Tom's creative energy. "I work seasonally. Different seasons suggest different types and elements of my work. I love the crisp colds of zero or below for icing in the winter. The summer brings outdoor work and construction, waterfalls and stonework. Spring and fall are transition times that tie the year together with welding, sand blasting and finishing. " My work is my life and I thrive on long days. There is only the transcendence of the everyday. Cooking, friends, love become the sublime witness of doing. Process for me is the essence of my day.

Abbreviated: Tom Holmes is a musician, sculptor and artist living in the NEPA Valley. He works in stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. Utilizing these elements in response to the natural environment, Tom crafts art events for the changing seasons. He holds a BA in music theory, composition and performance from the Crane School of Music at Potsdam New York. He has studied instrument construction for the past 15 years with Ben Hume of New York City, the worlds leading authority on ancient Central Asian musical instruments before 1200 A.D.. He has traveled the Pacific playing the great classic works with the Long Island Youth Orchestra. And met his wife Carol in 1989 as a crewmember of the sloop Clearwater. "My life is my art. There is no delineation between who I am and what I create. The essence of food, friends, music and love is at the epicenter of the everyday. If you are awake you are an artist." This year brings another season of ice work at Tom's sculpture park and the studio sculpture park of the American sculptor John Van Alstine in the north country of upstate New York. Tom traveled to France in April upon invitation to construct a large mobile for Lookout Sculpture Park Paris by sculptor owner Susanne Wibro Fost. His New York Chelsea show "Falling Pieces, Broken Hearts" opens May 10th at the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery, 511 West 25th Street. Tom opens another show as a long time member of the Artery Gallery in Milford PA on June 9th. He will also be coordinating a musical installation in conjunction with the Milford Music Festival on the same date. In November he will open a solo show at BAU, the Beacon Artist Union in Beacon New York. Tom's latest performance of Sound Sculpture at The Tusten Theater in Narrowsburg New York on June 30th, 2007 is the culmination of many years of preparation mentally and physically for Tom Holmes and Tom Moonan. Friends since their college days both have worked over the years to further the sound sculpture dream and to refine its parameters. Every event in the 14-movement piece represents a fragment in the musical and sculptural development of these two powerful artists. This tapestry of musical events traces their intellectual and emotion journey, which the two artists use to pry open, our compassion and senses. Their musical, percussive and sculptural intuition overwhelms ones ability to synthesize comparisons. Simply put this performance is a stunning example of transcendent wonder. Artist Vivian Altman will be exhibiting her most recent abstract paintings at bau, beacon artist union, in Beacon, from August 11 to September 2, 2007.

Although the majority of Vivian Altmans newest paintings were created in the dead of last winter, her colors are warm and vibrant, and celebrate the summer season. While the twisting, curving angular shapes are reminiscent of Altmans earlier works, many of her new pieces also incorporate circular motifs. Along with the various textures and shapes that suggest movement, these circles add new strength to the compositions.

Altmans work is intuitive, and each piece develops differently according to the inner response she has during the creative process. I know a piece is finished when I get a certain feeling about how the parts of the composition fit together. The push and pull of the forms are in balance, and the color makes a statement. I was drawn to the completeness of the circular shapes. They stand on their own and also contrast against other sharp, emotional angles, almost like ripples of water.

This is Vivian Altmans second year as a bau member. Altman is also a resident of Beacon and works out of Spire Studios, also in Beacon. Altman received her B.F.A. in Painting from the State College of New York at New Paltz, and her M. A. Degree in Studio Art at New York University, New York City. She has also studied at Massachusetts College of Art and at the Santa Raparata International Art School in Florence, Italy. For the last 11 years, Altman has taught art to gradesK-6 in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Newburgh, New York.

Altmans work has been shown at the New York Brooklyn Museum Art School, Vassar College, The Class of 1929 Art Gallery at Eisenhower Hall at The United States Military Academy at West Point, Edge Gallery, Denver, Colorado, Woodstock Art Gallery, Pace University Satellite Campus at Stewart Airport, Orange County Community College, The Orange County Art Federation and the Orange County Arts Council, and the New Paltz College Gallery, among others.

bau30: Fresh Ink, a printmaking event, is a project created by bau member Elizabeth Winchester in concert with fellow printmakers who began collaborating while sharing the graphics studio at Woodstock School of Art. While the printers, Emma Crawford, Ann Haaland, Sharon Nakazato, Marilynn Rowley and Christopher Staples, will exhibit finished work, a unique aspect of the project will be live printing demonstrations, providing a novel kind of theater. Et voila! The gallery becomes a working studio with press, where enterprising on-lookers may try their hand at some of the myriad techniques available to printers.
Over the course of the month master printer Lisa Mackie will lead a group of invited artists in a collaboration, creating an installation that will be viewed in completion at the closing reception on July 8. This exotic environment, an 'Exquisite Corpse in the Garden', will be a print-based garden constantly growing as the artists merge their installations in the gallery's backyard. The artists joining Lisa will include Peter Mackie, Laura Moriarty, Nobi Nagasawa, Jeffrey Price and Micaelann Tostanoski.
A panel discussion, "Still relevant: printmaking in contemporary art", will be held at Howland Cultural Center on June 24, at 4pm. Moderated by Winchester, the panelists, Lisa Mackie, master printer, Patricia Phagan, Straus curator of prints at Vassar, Phil Sanders, director of Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, and Paul Smart, art columnist will examine the dramatic shift in recent years to paper based work in contemporary practice and the crisis to printmaking precipitated by the rise of the digital age
